Salt dough fun with the kids.

The summer hasn’t particularly been that sunny in the UK this year has it? Not great when you have kids on their holidays and need to keep them entertained.

One of the things the boys likes to do is to create master pieces with salt dough 😀 It’s very cheap and lots of fun! All you need is:

  • 1 Cup of white flour (doesn’t matter if it’s self raising or not really)
  • 1/2 Cup of salt, which I normally buy Cooking salt which is cheap and cheerful.
  • Water (I don’t measure it, I just add a little bit at a time)

Mix the flour and salt together in a big mixing bowl, keep adding little amounts of water until the mixture gets a little bit sticky and knead, don’t worry if you add too much you can always add some more flour.

For my two oldest sons I have always made a hand print ornament, It makes a lovely keepsake. Admittedly with my eldest son I was given a clay hand print gift set which was where I got the idea for my middle son.

I decided it was time to make one of my youngest son’s hand print. Wow it took several attempts I’ll tell you 😀

Good tools to use are cookie cutters if you have any funny shaped ones and children’s paintbrushes as they are good if you use the other end. We spent a good hour or so making some brilliant creations.

Some people bake them off to make them set but I’d rather let them dry naturally which can take up to a few days, which is good because then you can save another day for painting! Two days worth of fun 😀

The pictures below are ones that we made over a year ago.
